Thwak Music! Creates Superbowl Ad with Yamaha Electronic Drums
Thwak Music! an original music and music supervision company led by founder Tony Verderosa, helped create a new sixty-second Sony commercial, “Surgeon,” directed by Noam Murro. The spot debuted during Super Bowl XLV.
Thwak! used a DTX950K electronic drum set and the DTX-MULTI 12 electronic percussion pad from Yamaha to deliver an original score for the cinematic spot, which promotes the upcoming Xperia Play android phone from Sony Ericsson. The tense drums, eerie sound effects and precise orchestral bursts pace the advertisement, which shows the back-alley creation of a robot – complete with human thumbs – that rises up, ready to use the new Xperia Play.
“My background as a composer and classically trained percussionist made Thwak! the right fit for this project,” Verderosa explains. “Working under a tight deadline, we understood that the sound for ‘Surgeon’ needed to be orchestral, cinematic and tribal – without ever stepping on the narrative. So the challenge is to make a major movie-type score without it getting too dense.”
